David acquired his XL1 six months prior to our conversation, for a sum not significantly less than its original sticker price. “It was registered in 2016, and I paid £80,000 for it,” he reveals. “It was certainly an investment, but the moment I saw it at a classic car dealer in Gloucestershire, I knew I had to have it.” His XL1 has a mere 6,000 miles on the odometer, meaning its incredible engineering has been largely preserved. However, the practicality of ownership presents a unique challenge: “To my surprise, servicing requires a trip back to VW UK, who arrange collection and delivery. There’s very little maintenance a private owner can perform themselves. My last service cost me £1700…” This highlights the specialized nature of maintaining such an advanced and limited-production vehicle.
