He applied for Porsche’s Sport Driving School, a program designed to immerse engineers, sales, and marketing personnel in the nuances of driving a Porsche, enabling them to better communicate the brand’s essence to clients. “This experience brought me into direct contact with the 911s I yearned to drive,” Preuninger beams. “Specifically, it was the first 996 GT3. I was utterly captivated. The high-revving engine, the low weight – it was something truly special.” Crucially, Preuninger’s admiration was tempered by a critical eye. “I knew I could make it better,” he states. A serendipitous encounter at a birthday party with Hartmut Kristen, then VP of Sales and Marketing and a key figure in the 996 GT3 project, presented him with the opportunity he had been waiting for. “I offered him some feedback on the car, and he agreed that my observations were valid. Unbelievably, he asked if I would be interested in managing the second generation, the 996 GT3 MkII.” “I deliberated for a short while,” he says with a grin, before confessing his lack of restraint. “No, I accepted before he had even finished his sentence. This was it. My dream realized.” Since then, the ethos of continuous improvement, high-revving powertrains, reduced mass, highly responsive chassis tuning, and a relentless push towards the dynamic envelope has been the hallmark of the GT department. Consider, for instance, the genesis of the first GT3 RS, also from the 996 generation. Its primary purpose was to homologate a new suspension upright for racing applications. The initial plan was to simply build 200 GT3s incorporating this new component to enhance the race cars. While effective, this understated approach would likely have gone largely unnoticed by the public. However, Andreas proposed a far more audacious strategy. He advocated for an even lighter, more aggressive, and track-focused variant, designed to rigorously test the market’s appetite for a road-legal race car. Certainly, we face intense competition, and yes, we aim to outperform our rivals and set new benchmarks at the Nürburgring. That is a given. But far more importantly, our objective is to craft something that resonates with the enthusiast who relishes the act of driving for its own sake. This principle applies equally to the S/T, the Spyder RS, or the GT3 RS.
